FAQs - Laser Hair Removal

How does it work?
Targeted bursts of light energy are delivered to the problem area and absorbed by hair-filled follicles. Melanin in the hair absorbs the light and turns it to heat energy, damaging the hair follicle and preventing re-growth. Because lasers are targeting Melanin, the colour in the hair, this treatment is unsuitable for those with white hair, certain types of red hair and less successful for grey and very fair types.

Can all hair be treated?
Treatments are customized according to hair colour, texture and location. Any hair with at least some pigment can be treated, so white, white blonde or white/grey hairs do not generally respond to treatment with this technology. Certain red hair types which have phaeomelanin will not respond to laser.

We also have electrolysis treatment which can permanently remove hairs of all colours.

How many treatments are needed?
The number of treatments required will vary depending on the density of hair, skin and natural hair colour and the location of hair on the body. We recommend a course of 6-9 which is generally sufficient but patients with particularly resistant hairs or medical conditions such as PCOS will need more. Commitment to coming as near to every 4 weeks is also important to minimise the number of treatments required.

How long do treatments last?
Sessions can last from a few minutes to more than an hour, depending on the size of the area being treated. The number of treatments required depends on several factors related to specific skin types and colour, thickness and density of hair. Several treatments are necessary to achieve the best results. It is important to understand that hairs in an active growth phase (anagen) are most affected by treatments. Since all hairs are not in this phase at the same time, several treatments are necessary to achieve the best results. Our clinical will design a treatment plan for you, including an estimate of how many sessions may be needed in order to meet your expectations.

Will the hair be permanently removed?
Both lasers damage the root of the hair to an extent that significantly impedes re-growth. Most of the roots do not re-grow but occasionally some do. In addition, new hairs from previously empty follicles are developing all the time so it is usually necessary to have an annual ‘maintenance’ treatment to keep hair free.

Will it hurt?
Both systems produce different sensations.

Lightsheer™ produces a rapid pinprick sensation which is reduced by the in-treatment cooling system.

RevLite® produces a warm sensation which is quickly eliminated by the in-treatment cooling system

Both systems are well tolerated by patients.

What happens after treatment?
After a Lightsheer™ treatment the treated hairs will fall out after a few days. After a RevLite® treatment the treated hairs will turn white and should start to slough off naturally after 2-3 days. You may remove them by a trimmer immediately after treatment if you wish. Your skin may be a little red after, but this will calm down quickly and you will able to return to your normal daily routine after treatment.

Are there any possible side effects?
The appearance of the treated area immediately following treatment will vary from patient to patient depending on the extent of the procedure and skin type. Side effects, if any, are usually minor. There may be some redness and swelling around the treated hair follicles; this is a desired clinical result indicating that the follicle has responded to treatment. This reaction typically disappears within hours. Most people return to normal activity right away. On rare occasions, some blistering may occur, but this typically resolves quickly. The skin can become darker or lighter following treatment, but will generally return to normal within a few weeks. Limiting sun exposure before and after each treatment will minimize the risk of complications.

How do I get the best results?
Most patients are thrilled after their initial few treatments but can become impatient as treatment progresses. It is important to remember the hair growth cycle is the reason that treatment takes weeks to complete. Follow the care instructions given to you and you will get great results without complications.
