FAQs - IPL Laser Hair Removal
How does it work?
Targeted bursts of light energy are delivered to the problem area and absorbed by hair-filled follicles. Melanin in the hair absorbs the light and turns it to heat energy, damaging the hair follicle and preventing re-growth. Because lasers are targeting Melanin, the colour in the hair, this treatment is unsuitable for those with white hair and less successful for grey and very fair types.
Will it hurt?
While the treatment isn't painful, some patients notice a feeling of slight discomfort similar to the snap of an elastic band or a sting. Most patients tolerate the procedure well; topical anesthesia is rarely required, but may be an option when treating more sensitive areas.
How long do treatments last?
Sessions can last from a few minutes to more than an hour, depending on the size of the area being treated. The number of treatments required depends on several factors related to specific skin types and colour, thickness and density of hair. Several treatments are necessary to achieve the best results. It is important to understand that hairs in an active growth phase (anagen) are most affected by treatments. Since all hairs are not in this phase at the same time, several treatments are necessary to achieve the best results. Dr. Montero will design a treatment plan for you, including an estimate of how many sessions may be needed in order to meet your expectations.
How many treatments are needed?
The number of treatments required will vary depending on the density of hair, skin and natural hair colour and the location of hair on the body. As IPL hair reduction is only successful on hairs at their growing stage, the number of treatments required also depends on how many of your hairs are at this phase. Because hairs will be at different stages of growth at any one time, repeating treatments to remove the remaining hair in an area is common.
How much time is there between treatments?
Subsequent treatments are scheduled when the hair begins to re-grow. The timing for this can range from four to eight weeks, depending on hair type and the part of the body being treated. On average, appointments are scheduled four to six weeks apart.
When will I see the results?
After treatment, some hairs may be removed immediately while others will take a couple of weeks to fall out.
Can all hair be treated?
Treatments are customized according to hair colour, texture and location. Any hair with at least some pigment can be treated, so white hairs are not possible to treat with this technology.
Are there any possible side effects?
The appearance of the treated area immediately following treatment will vary from patient to patient depending on the extent of the procedure and skin type. Side effects, if any, are usually minor. There may be some redness and swelling around the treated hair follicles; this is a desired clinical result indicating that the follicle has responded to treatment. This reaction typically disappears within hours. Most people return to normal activity right away. On rare occasions, some blistering may occur, but this typically resolves quickly. The skin can become darker or lighter following treatment, but will generally return to normal within a few weeks. Limiting sun exposure before and after each treatment will minimize the risk of complications.
