FAQs - Skin Peels - Physician Strength

What are Chemical Skin Peels?
Chemical Skin Peels dissolve the connection holding dead cells together on the surface of the skin and reveal the smoother, healthier skin beneath. We offer light, gentle peels, like Lactic and Salicylic, and mediums ones like TCA. The use of these peels depends on your age and the condition of your skin, which will be determined at the consultation.

How do Chemical Skin Peels work?
Skin peels dissolve dead skin cells on the surface, to reveal fresher and healthier skin underneath. While there are number of different types of peel available, we'll discuss which option is best for you at consultation. Generally, the peels we offer can be split into two categories, light and medium.

Light or superficial peels are relatively gentle and are usually made of natural ingredients such as sugar or fruits. They work by gently exfoliating your skin, smoothing the surface. They also stimulate collagen growth, which reduces wrinkles and gives you fresher, more youthful skin. There are two types of light peel available: lactic and salicylic.

Imperfections that can be successfully treated by Chemical Skin Peels include acne-prone skin, superficial acne scars, freckling, pigmentation problems, very fine lines and wrinkles, some age spots and dull complexions.

How many treatments do I need?
The programmes for all skin types include a course of 3 peels plus topical treatments, for minor to moderate skin damage. Patients with particularly sensitive or damaged skin might need 2 or more courses initially to achieve the best result. Once the result has been achieved all is needed is a maintenance peel every 6 months, and continuation of the cosmeceuticals.

Will it hurt?
No, although some people may notice a stinging sensation.

Will there be any redness or obvious peeling?
Usually there is no redness after the peel and peeling varies depending on your skin type. You will be able to resume your activities, including putting on make up. Very rarely minor redness or swelling develop which subsides within 1-2 days. Most people experience a mild flaking form day 3 to day 7 post- peel. As our peels are less aggressive but just as effective as stronger ones, usually your skin just feels drier than normal but the delivery serum and the neutraliser concealer supplied with your peel rehydrate your skin ,encourage healing and help prevent excessive flakiness.

When will I see the results?
Your skin should be noticeably revitalised after one treatment, but the optimum effect will happen after 3 months.
