What is ‘Botox®’ and how does it work?

“Botox®” is the brand name for Botulinum Toxin, a natural purified protein which relaxes wrinkle-causing muscles to create a smoothed, rejuvenated appearance. It is also used to treat medical conditions such as excessive sweating and migraines.

Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine that should only be prescribed and given by an appropriately trained healthcare professional, such as a doctor, dentist, pharmacist prescriber, or nurse prescriber.

Botulinum Toxin has an excellent safety profile. It is used in a variety of therapeutic areas and is one of the few treatments that can be given to children over 2 years of age (for non-cosmetic purposes).

It has been actively used for cosmetic procedures for over 15 years in tens of thousands of patients worldwide and has U.S FDA and European approval.

Very low doses of the toxin are injected into specific muscles. This relaxes the muscles and prevents contraction. It is the repeated contractions of these muscles that have caused the skin to crease and fine lines to appear.

The nerve impulse is blocked from reaching these muscles and the nerve simply relaxes or goes to sleep. This relaxation enables the skin to repair and the lines smooth away.

Just like “Hoover” was the first brand of vacuum cleaner and became a household name, the same is true of “Botox®”. As the first brand of botulinum toxin it too has become the name we associate with botulinum toxin injections.

There are other brands of botulinum toxin available which have different characteristics and patient benefits, and we use the product that will produce the best results for you.

Occasionally, patients that have been having a particular type of treatment for sometime can become resistant to its effects. Using different brands of Botulinum Toxin ensures that we always have an alternative should this happen.

Superficial bruising occurs in a few cases, this will disappear after a few days. There is a small risk of eyelid or brow droop, which are reversible after a few weeks.

All these will be discussed and explained in depth at your consultation.

We instruct you to do some facial exercises for a while after treatment. This improves the way in which Botulinum Toxin affects muscle movement and helps maximize the effect.

You will have a follow up three weeks after treatment to review results, and have a top-up if required.

You should see the effect start to work over the days following treatment and should be fully developed after two weeks.

For line and wrinkle treatment, the effects can last anywhere between 3-4 months. For excessive sweating treatment, effects can last up to 9 months.

Born in Almeria, Spain, Miguel has practiced medicine in England since 1994. Initially working in North-West hospitals developing his surgical and medical skills, he then worked as a GP in Burnley for 11 years. Miguel combines his knowledge of surgery, medicine, skin health and laser technology in his role as our medical director and principal practitioner.

Miguel is a member of the European Laser Association, British Medical Laser Association, British Medical Acupuncture Society, British College of Aesthetic Medicine and the Primary Care Dermatology Society. He is the lead in CPD and one of only a few Doctors to hold a Post Graduate Diploma in Cosmetic Medicine from the University of Leicester and a MSc in Non-surgical Cosmetic Interventions from UCLan. He is currently studying a PGDip in Dermatology at Queen Mary University, London.
