Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) affects 1 in 4 women where a disturbance of the release of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone during the monthly cycle produces harmless cysts on the ovaries. These cysts cause more male hormone to be released into the system resulting in unpleasant symptoms, one of which is Hirsutism (excessive hair growth).
Laser hair removal & electrolysis significantly reduce hair growth and brings welcome relief to our patients
Our nurse and therapist are experienced in treating patients with PCOS. They understand how symptoms affect patients and work with them to treat and manage excessive hair growth.
Medical Grade Lasers – Lasers such as Lightsheer™ Desire, which we use at Discover Laser, use a concentrated beam of light that safely targets hair at the root leaving the surrounding skin intact. They can be fine-tuned to suit your skin and hair type for exceptional results and are safe for all skin tones.
Whilst the nature of PCOS means that laser hair removal will be an ongoing treatment, you should be able to enjoy a significant reduction in the amount of hair through one or more courses of 6 treatments, after which you will need maintenance top ups to keep on top of new growth.
For smaller areas or for hairs on your face or body that laser is unable to treat, Electrolysis is the ideal solution. It can be used for grey, white and red hairs on all skin types. Treatment is with our aesthetic nurse who is registered with the British Institute & Association of Electrolysis.
Electrolysis is performed by inserting a very fine, flexible needle into the hair follicle and applying a tiny amount of electrical current which destroys it, stopping any more hair growth from that particular follicle.

What is PCOS?
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that is said to affect 1 in 4 women where a disturbance of the release of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone during the monthly cycle produces harmless cysts on the ovaries.
These cysts cause more male hormone to be released into the system, resulting in a number of unwanted and unpleasant symptoms. Symptoms vary widely from patient to patient and whilst some women can be barely aware of a problem, others can notice some or all of the following:
Irregular periods, weight gain, pelvic pain, thinning hair, acne, skin tags, reduced fertility and Hirsutism (excessive hair growth) which can occur on the face, neck, abdomen, breast, back, arms and legs.
Whilst there is no cure for PCOS there are treatments that can bring symptom relief. If you believe you may be suffering from PCOS please consult your GP who will be able to discuss this with you and organise tests if appropriate.
I have suffered with facial hair since reaching puberty – dealing with it initially by tweezing and bleaching and later by electrolysis and shaving, none of which worked for me. After marriage and children I started to shave due to the sheer amount of facial hair.
A skin specialist in 2002 diagnosed Hirsutism (excessive hair growth) and advised me that laser wouldn’t work for me and not to waste my money. Some years later I decided to see if I could find a solution and booked a consultation at Discover Laser.
My treatment began in February 2012 and I didn’t get too excited at the start as I had been disappointed so often in the past. The results at the end of my course of treatment have been spectacular. My confidence has increased, now I don’t need to worry about this anymore. I am not a vain person but facial hair really affected me… Laser hair removal treatment has changed my life and has given me confidence in my own beauty.
Discover Laser is a professional clinic with highly qualified and kind staff, who I would like thank very much.
