Treating Acne is never easy and quick fix promises are usually doomed to fail. A long-term dedicated approach is key.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE
Acne sufferers tend to over-wash their face in an attempt to keep it clean and oil free, but this can make matters worse.

Avoid over washing, exfoliating and stimulating your skin. This strips the skin of natural moisture and leads to production of more oil to compensate.

Finding a balance between reducing the production of oil, whilst maintaining the skin’s moisture can be tricky but washing twice a day should be sufficient.

COPING WITH BREAKOUTS
The trigger for Acne is hormonal but topical applications can help deal with breakouts. Products range from powerful prescription medication to gentle effective washes, lotions and creams, and the severity of your acne will dictate which is right for you.

Your skincare professional, be it a beauty therapist, cosmetic doctor, nurse or dermatologist, should guide you to products with a good percentage of active ingredients that suit your skin type. Remember acne sufferers can have sensitive skin too.

Avoid over-the-counter products where you don’t get advice as to whether the products are suitable for you.

COVER UP DON’T CLOG UP
Wearing makeup is a godsend for females with acne. If you’re not using it already, change to a high quality mineral make-up powder foundation. High quality minerals can help improve your skin condition and won’t clog your pores, you’ll be amazed at the difference they can make.

If you feel your mineral powder doesn’t cover your spots well enough, look for a brand which has a higher pigment content and this will cover perfectly. Barbara Panagos Cosmetics, Minerologie, Susan Posnick, Jane Iredale all are high quality minerals which will cover well and last longer.

Avoid mineral cream/mousse types or any cream/mousse/liquid foundation which will only add to your skin’s troubles. Also be aware of any mineral face powder containing talc. Talc is a mineral but is irritating for the skin. Most cheaper brands use this as a bulking agent.

TAKE CONTROL
Microdermabrasion, Blue Light Treatment and Laser can be effective methods of controlling and reducing breakouts but even these will need the support of topical products for the best outcome.

Consult your professional and give your chosen method of treatment time to work – you’ll be glad you did.
