If you suffer from facial redness and flushing you could have the condition Rosacea.

It is primarily a disorder of the facial blood vessels which become over responsive to stimuli such as sun exposure, heat, stress, anxiety, rich food, caffeine and alcohol.

Affecting approximately 1 in 10 people in the UK, Rosacea symptoms usually do not start until aged 30-60 but can start earlier.

Women are more commonly affected than men, but in men the condition is often more severe. Rosacea is more common in fair-skinned than dark-skinned people.

There are 4 different types of Rosacea which are:

Erythematotelangiectatic (ETTR): symptoms include flushing, facial redness and broken facial veins.

Papulo Pustula Rosacea (PPR): often called Acne Rosacea as it can look like acne, however it is a different condition.

Ocular: symptoms include stinging, itchy eyes, dryness, sensitivity to light, eyelid inflammation.

Rhinophyma:  persistent facial swelling and thickening of the skin, especially on the nose and cheek.

There is no permanent cure for Rosacea although facial redness, flushing and veins (ETTR) can be greatly reduced through highly effective IPL/ laser treatments.

PPR can be improved by a combination of laser and oral or topical antibiotics.

Ocular and Rhinophyma types need to seek the advice of a consultant Opthamolgist or Plastic Surgeon.

ETTR & PPR types should consult a skin professional who will be able to advise on suitable topical products for your skin type. Look for active ingredients that will help suppress, reduce or constrict the facial veins whilst soothing the heat and flushing common to this complaint.

The control of symptoms and the reduction in flushing and/or facial redness bring much needed relief to many sufferers, leaving them feeling more confident about their appearance.
