Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) often causes excess facial or body hair, which can feel frustrating, distressing and hard to manage – especially when regular waxing, shaving or creams only offer short-term relief.
At Discover Laser, we offer a medical-led, long-term solution: laser hair removal that’s safe, effective, and tailored for hormonal hair growth.
Our team has extensive experience treating women with PCOS and understands both the physical and emotional impact unwanted hair can have.
Led by Dr Montero, one of the UK’s leading laser experts, our Burnley-based clinic provides results-driven care in a calm, respectful and private setting – so you can feel more confident in your skin, every step of the way.

Patch Test – £25.00 (non-refundable)
As a safety measure, we patch test you before starting any laser hair removal treatment. It is usually done on a different appointment to your consultation, but you can request for it to be included when booking.
At Discover Laser, we use the Splendor X — a next-generation laser that combines Alexandrite (755nm) and Nd:YAG (1064nm) wavelengths in a single platform. This dual-technology approach allows us to treat a wide range of hair types and skin tones more effectively and comfortably than traditional systems.
For women with PCOS, who often experience coarse, dark hair in hormonally sensitive areas, Splendor X offers precise and powerful treatment. The Alexandrite wavelength targets lighter skin tones with high melanin contrast, while the Nd:YAG wavelength penetrates deeper and is ideal for darker skin tones — making it safe and inclusive for a diverse range of patients.
Its square-shaped laser beam ensures even coverage (no missed patches), and the built-in cooling system enhances comfort during treatment — especially important for sensitive facial areas commonly affected by PCOS-related growth. With consistent sessions, patients often see a significant and lasting reduction in unwanted hair, giving them back control and confidence in their skin.
Sarah – Aesthetic Therapist
Sarah joined Discover Laser in 2010 as Patient Co-ordinator. She is a familiar face to many of our long-term patients.
Her interest in all things skin quickly developed and in 2011 she achieved a Diploma in Anti-Ageing from Stonebridge College and ‘Core of knowledge’ in lasers and light therapies.
Keen to develop her skills as a therapist, Sarah undertook a Level 4 VTCT qualification in Lasers and Light Therapies, qualifying with distinction in March 2015. In 2021, she qualified as a Healthcare Assistant and now regularly supports our Mohs Surgeon.
Sarah has also received mineral makeup training at Harley Street Skin in London. Her natural ability to understand the needs of individuals allows her to help patients with their skincare and makeup needs.
Catherine – Aesthetic Therapist
Catherine joined Discover Laser in 2015, bringing with her a wealth of experience from over 25 years as a beauty therapist in Burnley and the surrounding area.
As a qualified Reflexologist, Reiki practitioner and teacher of beauty therapy, her patients appreciate her breadth of knowledge and enjoy her holistic approach to treatment.
Having recently added a ‘Core of knowledge’ in lasers and light therapies to her belt, and with her excellent knowledge of skin and hair, she is a key practitioner in our laser hair removal team.
Julie – Aesthetic Therapist
Julie is a familiar face at Discover Laser and we’re absolutely thrilled to welcome her back into the Discover Laser fold after a few years away!
A skincare expert, she qualified in South Africa in 1993 and has practised in clinics all over the North-West, specialising in Laser and IPL treatment.
She has lectured in beauty therapy and trained doctors, nurses and beauty therapists in advanced skin analysis and care. She has also practised at Salford Royal Hospital in a dedicated PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) clinic.
What is PCOS?
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition affecting around 1 in 10 women in the UK. It impacts how the ovaries function, often causing irregular periods, excess androgen (male hormone) levels, and polycystic ovaries – where the ovaries become enlarged and contain many fluid-filled sacs.
Despite the name, not everyone with PCOS has cysts, and symptoms can vary significantly from person to person. Some may have mild or no symptoms, while others experience a range of persistent issues.
Common symptoms include:
-
Irregular or absent periods
-
Difficulty getting pregnant (due to irregular ovulation)
-
Excessive hair growth (hirsutism), especially on the face, chest, back or buttocks
-
Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
-
Oily skin or acne
-
Thinning hair or hair loss from the scalp
While there’s currently no cure for PCOS, many of its symptoms can be managed with appropriate treatment and lifestyle changes. If you suspect you may have PCOS, speak with your GP, who can organise appropriate tests and guide you through your options.
I have suffered with facial hair since reaching puberty – dealing with it initially by tweezing and bleaching and later by electrolysis and shaving, none of which worked for me. After marriage and children I started to shave due to the sheer amount of facial hair.
A skin specialist in 2002 diagnosed Hirsutism (excessive hair growth) and advised me that laser wouldn’t work for me and not to waste my money. Some years later I decided to see if I could find a solution and booked a consultation at Discover Laser.
My treatment began in February 2012 and I didn’t get too excited at the start as I had been disappointed so often in the past. The results at the end of my course of treatment have been spectacular. My confidence has increased, now I don’t need to worry about this anymore. I am not a vain person but facial hair really affected me… Laser hair removal treatment has changed my life and has given me confidence in my own beauty.
Discover Laser is a professional clinic with highly qualified and kind staff, who I would like thank very much.
Shaheen – Discover Laser Patient with Asian skin type in her 40’s
“Catherine is so very approachable and instantly makes you feel at ease. Laser hair removal is fantastic I should have thrown away those tweezers and held my head up high years ago! No more self consciousness nor wasting time day after day plucking and tweezing when Discover Laser take care of it. Thank you.”

“I can only give this clinic 5 out of 5 stars. I looked around before I made my decision to be treated here. Cleanliness and friendliness were high on my agenda and this clinic certainly delivers those essentials. The treatment room is always spotless and hygienic, even down to the waiting area. I see the lovely Sarah for my treatment who is so friendly and personable. She made me feel so at ease from the moment I met her. She explained everything thoroughly and it’s always a pleasure to see her. I have had great results and I would recommend this place to anyone.”
