Your skin health comes first. Your clinician will examine the blemish carefully and, where appropriate, use a dermoscope for a closer look. If there is anything that needs further investigation, they will explain this and refer you appropriately rather than proceed with removal.

Curettage is a medical procedure in which a sharp instrument is used to scrape blemishes from the skin. It can be used on its own or combined with Electrocautery.

This gold-standard ablative laser treats a broad range of skin conditions by removing all or part of the skin. The body’s natural healing processes then replace the damaged skin with new and healthy tissue.

The majority of blemishes can be successfully removed with just one treatment. If you require more than one treatment this will be discussed at your consultation.

Electrocautery: A wound similar to a graze will form, which will then scab and fall off revealing new skin underneath.

Curettage: A small scab will form, which will then fall off revealing new skin underneath.

Laser: Immediately after treatment the area may go darker and look bruised, this will fade after a few days leaving no visible signs of treatment.

Plexr: The marks from each pulse of energy will be visible (as tiny dark dots) and will start to form scabs which together with the swelling will last for approximately 5 -7 days. There is no pain or discomfort and once the scabs have fallen off your skin will be smooth and flat but still pink. The colour will subside in the days/weeks that follow.

Your wound will typically take 7-10 days to heal and may be red for a few weeks before leaving normal skin or occasionally a small white flat mark. The skin may ooze or be sore immediately following the procedure, but most patients can return to work on the same day.

The removal of most blemishes will leave normal skin or occasionally a small white flat mark, which will regain its normal pigmentation over time. You should avoid picking any scabs to avoid scarring.

It is essential to apply a very high factor sun screen and avoid all sun exposure to the treated area to avoid burning the new skin and pigmentation damage.

Any blemishes that are excised will leave a scar. Generally, the size of your blemish will determine the length of your scar. As with all surgical scars there is a small chance that will overgrow and form a larger scar than usual (called keloid scarring).

Sometimes the risk of a prominent scar being unsightly is significant, and your doctor may recommend that you do not have it removed. This is a particularly important issue for blemishes on the face.

You may feel some minor discomfort from the initial local anaesthetic injection, but the procedure itself is usually well tolerated and quick, usually taking less than twenty minutes.

Your wound may be slightly sore for 7-10 days whilst it heals. We recommend that you apply Vaseline to the wound 3-4 times daily to keep it moist and avoid picking any scabs, to avoid scarring.

It is important that you apply a very high factor sun screen.

Many patients have multiple blemishes and it is possible to treat several at a time. However, it is sometimes better to remove one or just a small number of blemishes to assess your individual wound healing.

The vast majority of moles treated by shave excision will result in an excellent scar and only 3-5% of moles will re-grow longer-term. If re-growth does occur then it will usually take several years, however occasionally this re-growth can occur earlier.

The removal of skin tags, moles and cysts is not available on the NHS for most patients since the procedure is considered purely cosmetic. Only moles and skin tags which have suspicious features or are likely to be cancerous are removed under the NHS in the UK. If you have any concerns regarding your moles then it is important to get it checked out by a doctor immediately, particularly if you notice any changes in shape, size, border or colour.

There must be no risk of skin cancer in moles if they are to be removed for cosmetic purposes. If, during your examination, one or more of your moles is found to be suspicious then we will refer you to your GP who can arrange for further assessment.

Having a blemish removed can feel a little daunting, particularly if you haven’t had a procedure like this before. Your clinician will talk you through each step so you know exactly what to expect, and treatment is usually quick, with local anaesthetic used where required to keep you as comfortable as possible.

There is no need to be referred by your GP for treatment but you may wish to discuss it with them first. If you have any concerns regarding skin blemishes, especially moles, it is important to get them checked out immediately, particularly if you notice changes in shape, size, border or colour.

Our doctor will examine your skin in detail with a dermoscope during your consultation. This magnifies the skin and allows our experienced and knowledgeable doctors to spot potentially troublesome lesions which require a referral.

As members of the Primary Care Dermatology Society our doctors continues to receive dermoscopy training and are regularly updated with dermatological issues.

After your consultation, we advise you to take time at home to make a considered decision about the treatment of your blemishes. If you choose to go ahead, we will make an appointment for your procedure that will remove them once and for all.

On the day of treatment, you will come to our private clinic in Burnley. Our doctor will review your treatment, take pictures of your blemish(es) and will go through a treatment consent form with you.

The area to be treated will be cleaned, injected with local anaesthetic if required and your chosen treatment carried out.

Our doctor will talk you through caring for the treated area and you will be given a post-procedure care pack if required. An appointment will be made for a two-week follow up, which is included in the cost of your treatment.

Look after your renewed skin

Our doctor will give you specific instructions about looking after your wound. It’s important to keep the wound site clean in the first 24-48 hours to reduce the chances of infection while it heals.

We advise you to:

  • Keep the wound dry for 48 hours and then clean it gently daily
  • Keep the scar out of the sun until it’s healed
  • If the area where your skin lesion was removed gets increasingly painful, or becomes red and sore, you’ll need to let us know. You could have an infection in the wound and you may need to have some antibiotics.
  • Your scar may be red and raised at first. It will gradually fade over several months.

Your skin health comes first

Almost all common skin blemishes are benign (non-cancerous), however, if you have a skin blemish that our doctor suspects may not be benign he can immediately refer you to our in-clinic Consultant Dermatologist for private treatment, or your own doctor for treatment on the NHS  if your prefer.

When you have a skin tag, mole or cyst, the most important factor to consider is whether it is clinically safe for removal. This comes down to the expertise of the clinician doing the procedure and their knowledge of dermatology.
