It takes two…
Lightsheer® Desire – Hair removal at the speed of light
Discover Laser was one of the first and clinics in UK to upgrade to the new Lightsheer™ Desire, diode laser technology.
It treats larger areas such as legs and backs in just 15 minutes on average. That’s almost as quick as waxing, and treatment promises to be more comfortable too. A slight vacuum reduces the laser sensation and messy gels are a thing of the past.
LightSheer Desire’s versatility allows it to treat delicate face or bikini regions just as quickly and effectively, even during the same appointment. The integrated ChillTip Technology maximizes comfort while treating smaller or more delicate areas with precision.
Lightsheer® Diode – Laser precision
Lightsheer® is used on small and intricate areas. It uses a beam of highly concentrated light to target hair follicles. The light targets the melanin (natural colour) in the hair which then carries the light beam down to the root where the heat from the laser damages it.
To keep you as comfortable as possible we can cool your skin during treatment. Our Zimmer Cryo cooling system is the finest device available for laser hair removal procedures.
Cooled air (up to -20° C) is blown onto your skin during, and after treatment. This reduces skin sensation and thermal temperature making laser treatment safer and more comfortable whatever your skin type.
Laser versus IPL – what you need to know
Laser hair removal is available on every high street, but not all treatments and practitioners are the same. If you’re considering giving it a go, knowing the differences will make sure you lose hair safely and cost effectively.
What type of treatment am I being offered – Laser or IPL?
It may be called laser hair removal but the equipment being used may be laser or IPL (Intense Pulsed Light). Both deliver energy to damage the root of the hair to impede re-growth. However, this is where the similarity ends.
Medical Grade Lasers – Lasers such as Lightsheer™ Desire, which we use at Discover Laser, are diode lasers which use a concentrated beam of light that safely targets hair at the root leaving the surrounding skin intact. They can be fine-tuned to suit your skin and hair type for exceptional results and are safe for all skin tones.
IPL – IPL devices are more commonly found in salons as the equipment is far cheaper. It is also far less effective than laser. The less powerful broad-beam of light targets everything in its path and is unable to reach and destroy the roots of deeper hairs. It is generally only suitable for fairer skin and, in the hands of an unqualified operator, can damage darker skin tones.

Her interest in all things skin quickly developed and in 2011 she achieved a Diploma in Anti-Ageing from Stonebridge College and ‘Core of knowledge’ in lasers and light therapies. She has a Level 4 VTCT qualification in Lasers and Light Therapies, qualifying with distinction in March 2015.
Catherine Fraser – Aesthetic Therapist
Catherine joined Discover Laser in 2015, bringing with her a wealth of experience from over 25 years as a beauty therapist in Burnley and the surrounding area.
As a qualified Reflexologist, Reiki practitioner and teacher of beauty therapy, her patients appreciate her breadth of knowledge and enjoy her holistic approach to treatment.
Having recently added a ‘Core of knowledge’ in lasers and light therapies to her belt, and with her excellent knowledge of skin and hair, she is a key practitioner in our laser hair removal team.
Our medical grade lasers send targeted bursts of light energy to the treatment area, which is then absorbed by hair-filled follicles. Melanin in each hair absorbs the light and turns it to heat energy. This damages the hair follicle and prevents re-growth.
Because lasers work by targeting melanin (the colour in hair) this treatment is unsuitable for those with white hair, certain types of red hair and is less successful for grey and very fair types.
Treatments are customised according to hair colour, texture and location. Any hair with at least some pigment can be treated.
White, white blonde, white/grey hairs and certain red hair types do not generally respond to treatment with laser. We have electrolysis treatment which can permanently remove hairs of all colours.
This depends on the density of your hair, skin type and natural hair colour and the location of hair on your body. We recommend a course of 6-9 which is generally sufficient. If you have particularly resistant hairs or medical conditions such as PCOS you will need more.
You will need to commit to treatment every 4 weeks (or as near as possible) to minimise the number of treatments you will need.
Each treatment can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the size of area being treated.
The number of treatments you will need depends on your hair thickness, hair density and skin type. Several treatments are necessary to achieve the best results.
It is important to understand that hairs in an active growth phase are most affected by treatments. Since all hairs are not in this phase at the same time, several treatments are necessary to achieve the best results. Your practitioner will design a treatment plan for you, including an estimate of how many sessions you will need to get the results you desire.
Our medical-grade diode lasers damage the root of the hair to significantly impede re-growth. Most of the roots do not re-grow but occasionally some do.
In addition, new hairs from previously empty follicles are developing all the time – this means it is usually necessary to have an annual ‘maintenance’ treatment to keep hair free.
Lightsheer Desire produces a suction and heat sensation and is a comfortable treatment that requires no gel or cooling.
Lightsheer Diode produces a rapid pinprick sensation which is reduced by the in-treatment cooling system.
After a Lightsheer treatment hairs will fall out for up to 14 days. Your skin may be a little red immediately after treatment, but this will calm down quickly and you will able to return to your normal daily routine.
Immediately after treatment, the appearance of the treated area will vary depending on the extent of the procedure and your skin type. Side effects, if any, are usually minor. There may be some redness and swelling around the treated hair follicles; this is a desired clinical result indicating that the follicle has responded to treatment. This reaction typically disappears within hours.
Most people return to normal activity right away. On rare occasions, some blistering may occur, but this typically resolves quickly. Your skin can become darker or lighter following treatment, but will generally return to normal within a few weeks. Limiting sun exposure before and after each treatment will minimise the risk of complications.
Most patients are thrilled after their initial few treatments but can become impatient as treatment progresses. It is important to remember the hair growth cycle is the reason that treatment takes weeks to complete.
By following our care instructions given, you will get great results without complications.
Your suitability for treatment will be discussed with you at your free consultation.

Meg – Discover Laser Patient
Having laser hair removal at Discover Laser was such a good decision. I feel much more confident in my every day life without hair on my upper lip.
I have been to other hair removal clinics and they weren’t flexible with appointment times and didn’t care about you as a person, they just wanted your money! I would recommend Discover Laser to anyone – and I will be going back myself!
Discover Laser Patient
I have suffered with facial hair since reaching puberty – dealing with it initially by tweezing and bleaching and later by electrolysis and shaving, none of which worked for me. After marriage and children I started to shave due to the sheer amount of facial hair.
A skin specialist in 2002 diagnosed Hirsutism (excessive hair growth) and advised me that laser wouldn’t work for me and not to waste my money. Some years later I decided to see if I could find a solution and booked a consultation at Discover Laser.
My treatment began in February 2012 and I didn’t get too excited at the start as I had been disappointed so often in the past. The results at the end of my course of treatment have been spectacular. My confidence has increased, now I don’t need to worry about this anymore. I am not a vain person but facial hair really affected me… Laser hair removal treatment has changed my life and has given me confidence in my own beauty.
Discover Laser is a professional clinic with highly qualified and kind staff, who I would like thank very much.
Shaheen – Discover Laser Patient with Asian skin type in her 40’s
When I first went to Discover Laser for facial hair removal I was very nervous with no confidence. What a life changing experience from start to finish – the whole team have been amazing.
The difference in how I feel and the confidence I have gained is all thanks to the treatment, dedication and professionalism of the team. The facial hair was quite strong and I never thought the results would be as amazing as they have been.
I have gone from shaving it 3 times a day to nothing just the odd hair which is what I would expect. My friends have noticed the difference in me and they all say I have less hair than them. I now feel like a female rather than a male!
Thank you so much for the life changing experience you have all been fantastic!
